JAMES HENRY LEIGH HUNT Born at Southgate, Oct. 19, 1784. The articles which form this volume first appeared in monthly supplements to Leigh Hunt's London Journal. To Assist the Inquiring, Animate the Struggling and Sympathise with All, a folio journal that ran from April 2, 1834, to December 26, 1835. They were collected (with additional matter) in two crown 8vo volumes in 1848, entitled The Town; its Memorable Characters and Events. By Leigh Hunt. St. Paul's to St. James's, and published by Smith, Elder, and Co., 65, Cornhill, London. The proofs of the present reprint have been read with a copy of that edition, and the original headlines have been followed as closely as the difference in the sizes of the respective pages would allow. Of the original illustrations the publishers have reproduced all those which really illustrate the text and are not merely of an ornamental character. An Index of Persons and Places has been added to the book for the first time in the present edition. A. R. W. |
